Regional Features of Ohio

Ohio is the crossroads of industry and culture in the American Midwest, a vital hub often described by the saying, "All roads lead to Ohio." Known as the "Birthplace of Aviation," it is a state filled with an enterprising spirit, having produced the Wright brothers and numerous astronauts such as John Glenn and Neil Armstrong. Economically, it hosts a major manufacturing base for Japanese automakers that has supported local employment for years; recently, it has also drawn the spotlight as a high-tech hub with the construction of a massive factory by a global semiconductor giant. Consequently, the Japanese resident population is very high. An area near Columbus feel like a "Little Tokyo," with a concentration of Japanese supermarkets, bookstores, Japanese-language supplementary schools, and clinics with Japanese-speaking staff, providing a sense of security for those living abroad for the first time. A unique culinary highlight is Cincinnati Chili, a distinctively spiced meat sauce (with hints of cinnamon and chocolate) served over spaghetti and topped with a mountain of cheese; it is a flavor that becomes addictive. The shores of Lake Erie offer amusement parks and beaches, providing plenty of summer leisure. The state also thrives in sports and music, housing the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (Cleveland) and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With a low cost of living, distinct seasons, and safe suburban neighborhoods, it is a comfortable region for Japanese families, and many choose to stay for the long term.
