Regional Features of Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania

Known as the "Keystone State," Pennsylvania is a historic state dotted with many important landmarks of America's founding, such as Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the battlefield of Gettysburg. Japanese companies are active here in the manufacturing and pharmaceutical sectors. The representative star of the local food culture is the "Philly Cheesesteak," featuring thinly sliced beef and melted cheese on a roll; eating one piping hot from a street stall or local shop is the ultimate experience. In Pittsburgh, sandwiches stuffed with french fries and coleslaw are famous. The central part of the state is home to Amish communities who lead a traditional agrarian lifestyle without electricity; the pretzels and shoofly pies they make are simple and delicious. The state also has Hershey, the "Sweetest Place on Earth," where the headquarters of Hershey Chocolate is located. The four seasons are beautiful, with autumn leaves and winter snowscapes resembling paintings. It is also the setting for many films, such as The Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It is regarded as a calm and prestigious region where the weight of history harmonizes with modern industry and a unique culinary culture.
